Why Do People Seek Colon Hydrotherapy?
“I feel bloated."
"I'm going to the bathroom, but I never feel completely finished."
“I’m making changes to my health, and I want to understand where colonics fit.”
People come to colon hydrotherapy with different experiences, questions, and goals. Constipation is one reason, but the conversation often extends beyond into how someone feels in their body and how they approach their overall well-being.
Some arrive because of discomfort. Others have heard about colonics from a friend or received a recommendation from another practitioner. Many are simply curious.
Whatever brings you here, my first step is a conversation.
Bowel comfort and more complete elimination
Straining, hard stools, infrequent bowel movements, and repeatedly feeling unfinished are common reasons people ask about colonics.
Others describe abdominal fullness or bloating that makes their clothing uncomfortable. They want to understand whether bowel emptying will remedy their situation.
Colon hydrotherapy introduces filtered water into the colon, the waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. This process is repeated several times during a session. Colon hydrotherapy best benefits the body by understanding contributing factors such as adequate nutrition, fluid intake, movement, as well as one's stress levels and how all of these factors are affecting bowel emptying.
Changes in your usual routine
Travel, changes in eating habits, busy schedules, and putting off bathroom breaks can disrupt bowel routines. This is one reason why people come in -- for a reset.
During a consultation, we look at what has changed, how long it has been happening, and what you have already tried. This is an important discussion in addition to the treatment.
Skin concerns and an interest in whole-body care
As an esthetician and colon hydrotherapist, I understand the link between skin health and what's happening within the body's internal environment.
Someone dealing with breakouts or a dull-looking complexion may be exploring nutrition, stress, sleep, skincare, and bowel habits together. Colonics are a conversation worth having as releasing stagnation in the bowel can have profound affects on the skin, from clearing up a skin breakout to giving the skin an overall glow.
A broader wellness reset
For some people, interest in colonics begins during a period of renewed attention to their health.
They are changing how they eat, moving more, making room for sleep and rest, and paying attention to their bowel movements. They want to feel more comfortable and more connected to their body.
This is also where questions about weight and metabolism arise. I don't like to market colonics as a weight-loss treatment; however, I have personally experienced post-pregnancy weight-loss following three colonic sessions scheduled a week apart. The weight came off after 2 weeks time.
So, its a discussion worth having as long as my client understands and implements a supportive lifestyle and has realistic expectations around the process.
Alongside another practitioner’s care
Some people ask about colon hydrotherapy while following a naturopathic or other practitioner-directed program, including programs such as liver and/or parasite cleansing.
In that situation, colon hydrotherapy can help alleviate unwanted symptoms associated with these types of protocols by supporting the body's ability to eliminate toxins via the bowel. People often feel so much better afterward and the cleansing program becomes much more comfortable and effective.
General wellness and occasional care
People also ask whether colonics should be part of an ongoing wellness routine.
My answer is yes, it can be. Colonics bring more energy into the body, provide a much more relaxed and restful sleep, increase mental clarity and focus, improved recovery and performance, so a colonic received as part of a maintenance schedule holds many benefits.
Receiving a colonic once a month, or a 3-session series in the spring and fall is my go-to suggestion for maintenance.
Colonoscopy preparation requires a separate plan
Colonic irrigation has been used for bowel preparation in specific medical settings. This requires direct coordination with the clinician performing the colonoscopy. This is essential to get it right. A sole colonic session will not, and is not meant to, fully "clean" the bowel. Under normal circumstances, the bowel was never meant to be completely empty. So if you're seeking a more natural and gentle colonoscopy prep, its best to receive the added guidance from your provider and/or find a provider who implements colonics as part of the prep.
Stress, body awareness, and restorative care
Some people arrive feeling rushed, tense, and disconnected from their body’s signals. They recognize that stress affects their bathroom habits and want a more attentive approach.
At Soma, breathing, comfort, privacy, and time to settle are part of how I provide care. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions and communicating throughout the process.
That restorative setting is intentional. The breathwork and supportive environment offer space to slow down and will provide a much better outcome to the elimination process.
More is not always better
I have performed hundreds of colonic sessions, and I take the responsibility of this work seriously.
I am meticulous about reviewing health history, screening for contraindications, and explaining the process. I pay attention to equipment hygiene, comfort, communication, and how each person responds.
I bring that same care to recommendations about frequency. Every session should have a purpose. More sessions do not automatically mean greater benefit, and excessive sessions hold no benefit. In fact, too many sessions can disrupt bowel flora and electrolyte balance. Just like anything else, moderation is key.
Your reason for coming in is where we begin
Perhaps you have been feeling uncomfortable and not yourself. Perhaps another practitioner referred you. Perhaps you are curious about how it fits into your approach to wellness.
A consultation gives us time to discuss your goals, review your health history, and determine an appropriate plan.
At Soma Restorative Wellness, that individual attention is the foundation of my approach.
